In his article ‘How Dundee became a computer games centre’ , Peter Day provides an interesting insight into the rise of games companies in Dundee. It all started with a tech savvy city: the home of Timex where Clive Sinclair’s ZX Spectrum was assembled in the early 1980s.
Dundee suffered with the industrial decline in the 1980s and 1990s and needed to find a new ‘industry’. In 1997 Abertay University, led by visionary local demand, offered the first computing games degree in the world in 1997. Since then thousands of students have graduated with games relates skills.
Dundee is clearly the centre of games production in Scotland. Glasgow and Edinburgh account for 27% of games companies, and there are small companies scattered throughout Scotland. You can see more information in our map in the infographic below.
Software Development is the top skill for the games companies. 3D skills along with app development and mobile solutions are also high in the skills. Far higher than the 'norm'.
The games companies work within a number of sectors other than games. Financial Services, Sport and Education all appear in the top 5. This perhaps indicates the rise of gamification in more ‘traditional’ business sectors who are using technology to engage and educate their clients.
The size of the companies is similar to the Scottish norm i.e. 82% have less than 20 employees. However, there are some larger companies based in Dundee and Edinburgh.
